A unique natural environment for practising sports. An excellent climate and a privileged strategic location.
Banyoles and the Pla de l’Estany region is small in size (267.73 km2) but large in its sports tradition.
It is an ideal location for all sports practitioners –elite, professional or amateur– and for clubs and federations that are looking for a place to organise their training camps and pre-competition preparation.
Banyoles has a wealth of experience in organising major sports events: over 56 events a year, of which more than 17 are part of international competitions; training bootcamps for numerous teams and sports federations; Banyoles has even been chosen by elite sportspeople as a place to live in permanently.
It was a subvenue for the 1992 Olympic Games, and it has been, and still is, a venue for international rowing, triathlon and MTB competitions.
Since 2005, the University of Girona has chosen Banyoles as the site for the first Sport and Physical Education Chair and the Centre of Olympic Studies; and also middle- and advanced-level training cycles in physical and sports activities for training and disseminating physical activity and sport.
As a sports tourism destination, Banyoles has more than 80 sports facilities where 22 different types of sport can be practised, with specialisations in rowing and canoeing, cycling and MTB, swimming, team sports (basketball, football and handball), triathlon and running. Over 40 agencies are involved in the region’s sports. Of these, 5 are active and sports tourism companies, 4 are public administrations that devote resources to sport and tourism, and 33 are active and sports tourism entities, clubs and associations.
Banyoles is also the first destination certified in Sports Tourism by the Catalan Tourist Board, in 2003. This quality seal is a recognition that the tourist destination offers high-quality resources and services for elite sports practitioners, professionals, amateurs and tourists who wish to practise sports activities.
