Molí dels Paraires

The Molí dels Paraires (Fullers' Mill) is a historic building located in the placeta de Sant Pere, near the main square Plaça Major of Banyoles. This mill, also known as Molí de la Victòria, dates back to the 14th century, with the first documented reference in 1337. It was owned by the Confraria dels Paraires, a guild dedicated to the wool industry, which used the mill for its activities.

During the Middle Ages, Banyoles was renowned for the quality of its woolen cloths, which were exported to various regions of the Mediterranean. The Molí dels Paraires played a fundamental role in this process, as it utilized water from the rec Major to power its mechanisms.

Recently, the Banyoles City Council has completed the rehabilitation of the mill to make it visitable. The works have included the installation of a picoturbine, which generates electricity by harnessing the original four-meter-high water drop, as an example of a sustainable hydraulic energy source. This investment has cost approximately 80,000 euros, including the acquisition and rehabilitation of the building.

Currently, the Molí dels Paraires is a point of interest for visitors who wish to learn about Banyoles' industrial and historical heritage. The space has been adapted to allow visits both from the interior, with scheduled tours, and from the exterior, through a semi-transparent door that allows observation of the watercourse and the mill's operation.
