The Plaça Major, a 13th century porticoed square, is Banyoles’ most emblematic square and also the best known. It has a very regular square shape; it is planted with plane trees and there are 40 large porticoes along the perimeter that support buildings built with travertine, also known as “stone of Banyoles”.
Since time immemorial, it has been the place where the inhabitants of Banyoles have preferred to congregate and socialise. It is the main centre of commercial life in Banyoles and the weekly market is held there every Wednesday. There are also a few stalls selling fruit and vegetables on Saturday.
The historical site of the Plaça Major is protected by the Government of Catalonia since 1999 as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
