Details that will make you discover a unique Banyoles

In Banyoles you will find a series of singularities that can hardly be repeated in another destination: l'Estany, the largest karstic lake on the Peninsula, the fishery, the irrigation channels, the only artisanal paper mill in operation in the Girona region, a particular gastronomy and a great richness in fauna and flora, among others.

Next, we compile the visits and activities that you cannot miss in these three days of stay in our small city.

Day 1

To learn about the origins of Banyoles, we recommend that the first visit is to l' Estany de Banyoles (The Lake of Banyoles).

In l'Estany you will find a circular route that will allow you to get to know all of its surroundings: the lakes, the riverside forests, the viewpoints, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Porqueres, the pesqueras, the site of the Parc Neolític de la Draga and also a great variety of flora and fauna.

Going around l'Estany you can see small water channels on the eastern side. These are the ditches and their function is to channel the water from l'Estany to the center of the city.

With the route of the Rec Major you will be able to follow the course of one of the main channels and thus discover the origin of the city.

The singularity of Banyoles is unique and incomparable, and proof of this is that in this route the course of the water will accompany you through washers, mills, historic buildings and much more until you reach the last point of the route: the Farga d'Aram and the Molí Paperer Escatllar.

Do not miss the visit and the workshop on how to make paper in the only active artisanal paper mill in the Girona region.

Day 2

Today we propose that you enter the Old Town of Banyoles.

Along the route you will enjoy the commercial streets with ancient shops, historical buildings and the essence of a small town.

Visit the most representative monuments to get a closer look at what is hidden in them: the Plaça Major, the Pia Almoina, the medieval wall, the Llotja del Tint, the church of Santa Maria dels Turers and the monastery of Sant Esteve, among others.

If you do not want to miss any details, periodically, through the Museus de Banyoles, guided visits (in catalan and/or spanish) are organized to the main buildings and monuments of the center, as well as in the monastery of Sant Esteve to visit the Arqueta de Sant Martirià and the altarpiece of Nostra Senyora de l'Escala.

In the historic center there is also the Darder Museum. It is a natural history museum that explains the origin of l'Estany de Banyoles and all the peculiarities of the largest karstic lake in the Iberian Peninsula.

We recommend that you pay a visit to get to know and better understand what you will see on the next visit that we propose: the route of the wetlands of La Puda and les Estunes.

It is a tour in the middle of nature in which various ponds are hidden and where you can also see storks. This itinerary will take you to Les Estunes forest, a unique spot that will allow you to enter between large travertine slabs and learn about the legend of the Goges, the fairies that live near l'Estany de Banyoles.

To end the day, we suggest you experience the magic of a sunset, while the sun sets, at l'Estany.

It is a unique and unrepeatable moment that you cannot miss.

Day 3

Just as we suggested watching the sunset from l'Estany yesterday, today we recommend you not to miss the sunrise from the Puig Clarà viewpoint.

The Can Morgat and Puig Clarà route will take you to discover the northwest area of l'Estany de Banyoles, with unique panoramic views over the Pla de l'Estany region, as well as a large area of l'Empordà until the sea.

Another viewpoint from which you can have unique views of l'Estany de Banyoles is the Puig de Sant Martirià. Besides the views, at this point, slightly higher, you will find the remains of an old convent (16th-19th centuries) and the image of the patron saint of the city, Sant Martirià.

Before ending your stay in Banyoles, you cannot leave without one of the typical pastries such as tortada, cansalades or cargols.
