Casa dels Lleons

The Casa dels Lleons (House of the Lions) is one of the most distinctive buildings in Banyoles’ medieval heritage. It takes its name from the lions depicted in the 14th-century Gothic wall paintings preserved in some of its rooms, which were discovered during restoration work on the building.

These paintings depict secular scenes related to the chivalric and courtly world, a theme that is highly unusual in Catalan medieval mural painting. Owing to their artistic quality and exceptional state of preservation, they provide remarkable evidence of civil life and the cultural expressions of medieval society, making them one of the most important surviving examples of Gothic secular mural painting in Catalonia.

Built of travertine stone and featuring a characteristic arcaded ground floor, this privately owned house forms part of the historic complex that developed around the medieval town. The building is a key element in understanding the urban, artistic and social history of Banyoles.
