Curch of Remei de Guèmol

The Church of Our Lady of  Remei (Remedy) is the main historical and religious landmark of the Guèmol district. The current building was constructed in 1803, but its origins date back to an earlier church dedicated to Saint Peter, documented in 957 as a possession of the Monastery of Sant Esteve de Banyoles.

The present church replaced the former medieval building and became the centre of religious life for the local community. It is notable for its square bell tower, visible from much of the Banyoles plain, and for its location in one of the city’s historic western areas.

The place name Guèmol has been documented throughout the centuries in various forms, such as Agemalo, bearing witness to the antiquity of this site. A small rural settlement developed around the church, closely linked to the monastery and to the agricultural activities of the area.

Today, the church remains part of the Parish of Saint Peter and stands as a valuable testimony to the historical and religious evolution of Banyoles and the Pla de l’Estany region.
