puig de Sant Martirià

Puig de Sant Martirià, at 242 meters in altitude, is a mountain located to the north of Banyoles, offering a spectacular view of the entire Pla de l’Estany region. This observation point, with a 360-degree panorama, allows one to see from the Pyrenees to the Transversal Range, with iconic mountains like Canigó and Mare de Déu del Mont. It is considered the ultimate viewpoint of the city and one of the best places to enjoy a diverse landscape that includes the Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, and other nearby areas.

At the summit of Puig stands the ruins of the Convent Vell, a place of great religious significance since the 13th century, dedicated to Sant Martirià, the patron saint of Banyoles. This convent was occupied by several religious orders and played a key role until the 19th century. In addition to the ruins, the solitary oak tree of Teixidor and one of the few olive groves that survived the great cold wave of 1953, which affected the region, are notable.

The slopes of Puig de Sant Martirià are covered with natural vegetation such as oaks, rosemary, and thyme bushes, complementing this special environment. It is a place of great beauty and tranquility, offering a wide range of outdoor activities, as well as a deep connection with the history and nature of Banyoles.

This location is highly valued not only by tourists, but also by the inhabitants of the region who enjoy the views and the rich history of the place.
