Cal General is a remarkable 19th-century bourgeois manor house located on the shores of Lake Banyoles, associated with the estate known as “Les Rotes”. The building combines neoclassical elements with a strong representative character. It features a square ground floor and a cross-shaped upper floor, structured around two large terraces opening to the east and west.
The estate is accessed through a semicircular arched gateway built of limestone with rusticated voussoirs. At the centre of the iron gate above it, the inscription “Las Rotas, año 1868” (“Les Rotes, year 1868”) can be read, referring to the original estate.
History
The building was commissioned by Narcís d’Ameller i Cabrera (1810–1877), a career military officer who attained the rank of lieutenant general. He was also a progressive member of the Spanish Parliament and a noted composer. The construction of Cal General reflects the social and economic prestige achieved by the Ameller family during the second half of the 19th century.
Today, the building houses La Draga School, a public primary and preschool education centre.
