Plaça dels Turers

The Plaça dels Turers is one of the many constructions that were planned outside of city walls to accommodate troops permanently stationed there for defence.

Banyoles became a military town in 1716. Accordingly, at the beginning of 1741, the Town Hall commenced construction of this space, which had a building intended as a barracks, with a portico made of Banyoles stone and round-arch arcades.

The Voltes dels Turers is designed as an arcade and is included in the Catalan Inventory of Architectural Heritage. A number of establishments opened underneath the arches after the mid-20th century.

Part of the weekly market occupies the square on Wednesdays; most of the stalls there sell seedlings and flowers. The square divides the town from east to west, between the historic centre and the part that would later grow toward the Lake, and from north to south.
