Sports and Nature
The Lake is the origin and the main distinguishing feature of the city of Banyoles.
In conjunction with its lake basin, this is considered as the largest karst aquifer on the Iberian Peninsula and a unique area of great geological, ecological, scenic and cultural value.
The natural assets of the Lake and its surroundings have been recognised with several forms of protection. In 1992 it was included in the Areas of Natural Interest Plan (PEIN) by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia; in 2000 and 2003, on a European level, it was recognised as an area of the Natura Network and a Site of Community Interest. It is also part of the Ramsar Convention that qualifies the lakeland area as a Wetland of International Importance.
It is up to everyone, both people from Banyoles and visitors, to maintain and respect this privileged natural environment.
